Morocco’s Benzina is first player in Hijab at Women’s World Cup

Morocco’s defeat of South Korea on Sunday in the Women’s World Cup continues to garner space in the record books. Apart from Morocco becoming the first country in the Arab World to  get a point and also win the  first match at the Women’s World Cup, defender, Nouhaila Benzina became  the first player to compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup while wearing a Hijab.

Morocco has achieved another historic milestone in football, with Nouhaila Benzina becoming the first player to compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup while wearing a Hijab.

Benzina’s performance has been hailed by Assmaah Helal, the co-founder of the Muslim Women in Sports Network, who expressed the importance of Benzina’s achievement, stating, “Girls will look at Benzina [and think] ‘that could be me.’
